Pellets vs Whole Hops

Postby John Jost » Mon Nov 09, 2009 8:22 pm

Question: If I have 2oz of Pellets is the conversion of Whole Hops the same in ounces?

Recently purchased some whole hops, ( oh my, what a beautiful and wonderful smell!!!!) The recipe I have calls for pellets. However I'd rather use whole hops.
Help?

Thanks,
John Jost

Typically, you use a bit more leaf hops than pellet hops because the pellets have a higher utilization in the boil. However, in real world brewing, I always use the same amount. Too lazy to worry about the minor difference:)

I always use the same amount, pellet or whole. You'll have to taste the beer when you're done and make notes for adjustments on the next batch depending on your taste.

You'll also find that whole hops hold on to some of the wort at the end of the boil so you may have a tad less wort at the end of the boil.

I found that I get greater utilization out of my hops (pellet and whole) now that I'm not using a hop sock. I haven't made any adjustments to my recipes, they're just hoppier! :D
