CVBG Forums Updated!

Postby Mark Ranes » Tue Apr 07, 2015 9:00 am

Hopefully you didn't notice, but the CVBG Forums were updated two weeks ago.

The box that hosts the forums, and my (hasn't been updated in well over a year) homebrewing blog, sits under the TV in my family room. About two years ago, the second backup drive died, so backups had to happen differently. Then, six weeks ago, when I remotely logged in to the server, there was an asshat remotely controlling the server and buying stuff online, with what I assume were stolen credit card numbers. It scared the crap out of me! I found out how they got in and then planned a strategy to purge any nastiness that may have been left on the server for future exploits.

A quick trip to Amazon yielded two new terabyte drives and double the memory of the original server. That was the easy part. Figuring out how to migrate the data to a much newer server OS was a major challenge, but I now know how to migrate MySQL databases and both WordPress and PHPBB3 to a new server! Woohoo!

Overall, the forums seem to pop a little quicker and I think the transition happened without anyone really noticing that anything was different:) There is a new version of the forum software that has additional features, so be sure to check out the updated forum interface.
